Subject: Tax cuts should be for “the poor” first.
February 24, 2007
Dear minister of finance,
Any new tax cuts should be for those who earn less than thirty thousand dollars a year and find themselves paying three to five thousand dollars a year for income taxes.
The RRSP does not help “the working poor” who have little to save and hence to reduce their taxes by use of this shelter which really serves more to enhance stock market and bankers accounts than savings of lower earning Canadians who do not have thousands to put away and save.
A fifty per cent cut in income taxes federally is what is needed by the average worker.
Savings from reduced need for social services at all levels of government, cancelling the quarterly GST rebate, and raising business taxes can offset any loss of funds to the government.Income taxes are a business expense because employers have to pay higher wages to their employees as a result of the taxes which are withheld and because the employers ultimately are the ones paying these taxes.
This is a very serious problem with Canadians paying on average over half of their incomes in taxes, especially for those with low incomes under thirty thousand dollars a year. They have little left to purchase the needs in life including child care, drugs not covered by insurance, car maintenance, gas for the car, babysitter or transportation.
The province of Ontario is going about helping by spending which is wrong and in my opinion criminally irresponsible.
This federal and the provincial government of Ontario have huge debts and can ill afford the uncontrolled spending of blow hard wind bags for political points.
Sincerely yours,
